His comments were made during a meeting with Kenyan officials in Nairobi, showcasing a shift from his earlier views in January 2023 when the country faced significant challenges in this area.
Kenya has significantly invested in its anti-doping efforts, committing $25 million over five years to rectify its image after being declared non-compliant by the World Anti-Doping Agency following scandals linked to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Coe noted improvements in the number of anti-doping personnel, testing practices, investigations, and educational initiatives. He stated, “We are moving in the right direction,” emphasizing the need to acknowledge past setbacks while fostering trust in the future efforts against doping.
Since 2017, nearly 130 Kenyan athletes, principally long-distance runners, have faced sanctions for doping violations. Recently, Kenya instituted its first lifetime ban for marathon runner Beatrice Toroitich and a six-year ban for 10km record-holder Rhonex Kipruto.
Coe cautioned that the number of sanctions may rise as Kenya’s rigorous testing protocols yield results. He will soon compete for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Greece.
