Stanley Martey from Ghana Water Company addressed concerns about water shortages, denying extreme severity while acknowledging the need for rationing. He outlined plans to improve supply through various projects, and urged the public to store water as a precaution. Martey called for community support to manage the ongoing issues effectively.
The Director of Communications at Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Stanley Martey, has responded to public concerns about water shortages, particularly in the Volta Region. He asserted on the Asaase Breakfast Show that claims of a severe situation are exaggerated, emphasizing GWCL’s commitment to transparency in its operations.
Martey acknowledged the existing water shortages but explained that rationing is essential to manage supply equitably. He stated, “We are unable to supply water to meet the full demand of the population, and the only way to manage this is through rationing.” The distribution may vary based on proximity to supply sources, but he encouraged the community to store available water.
In terms of solutions, Martey outlined GWCL’s plans for improving water supply across different timelines. Short-term actions include fixing a treatment plant breakdown. Medium-term projects involve replacing outdated pumps, expected to finish between March and April. A long-term Ghana Water Expansion Project aims to accommodate increasing demand but requires substantial funding and government approval.
Martey urged residents to prepare by storing water, noting that while consistent supply is not assured, people can manage better if they store water when available. “Every area receives water at least four days a week, so if people store water, they can manage when there is no flow,” he advised. He reassured the public of GWCL’s commitment to resolving these issues and apologized for any inconveniences experienced.
Acknowledging challenges stemming from population growth that the development has not kept pace with, Martey called for public cooperation in managing the situation. He concluded by urging the community to support each other during this time, reinforcing GWCL’s priority to improve service and stating, “We are pleading with the public… let us support each other and manage the situation together.”
Ghana Water Company Limited has clarified the ongoing water shortages in parts of the country, particularly focusing on the Volta Region. Despite claims of severe shortages, GWCL maintains the situation is being managed through rationing and plans for improvement. Martey emphasized the importance of public cooperation in storing water and mentioned ongoing projects to enhance water supply, while reiterating the need for mutual support in addressing these challenges.
