The world’s top 20 polluted cities predominantly lie in Asia, with 13 in India, indicating severe air quality issues, particularly high PM2.5 levels. The report highlights the health risks associated with pollution and calls for enhanced government action and data awareness.
A recent report has highlighted that 19 of the top 20 most polluted cities globally are located in Asia, predominantly in India, where economic growth is heavily driven by coal and plagued by traffic congestion. The cities include 13 from India, four from Pakistan, one from China, and one from Kazakhstan. The only city outside this region is N’Djamena in Chad, identified as the most polluted in Africa.
The global air quality report from IQAir underscores the widespread and severe pollution challenges faced predominantly in Asia, particularly India, affecting the health of millions. With severe consequences from PM2.5 exposure, urgent action is needed to mitigate pollution through stronger regulations and investment in cleaner energy. Enhancing awareness and data transparency remains critical in combating air pollution worldwide.
