Nombanza recalled the memories of Nujoma’s encouraging presence, particularly his contributions to Namibian music through song recordings at their studio. He reiterated Nujoma’s dedication to culture, emphasizing his belief in using music and arts to promote unity in Namibia.
Although Nujoma never danced, he found joy in singing freedom songs to uplift morale during the struggle for independence. The troupe leader noted that during their exile, Nujoma would organize cultural events to promote cohesion among comrades. Celebrating Nujoma’s birthday became a significant tradition post-independence.
Nombanza recounted his first interaction with Nujoma at the Cassica farm in Angola in 1980, highlighting a unique educational engagement that enriched their understanding of the struggle. The loss of Nujoma left Nombanza feeling an emotional void, making it difficult for him to adjust without his guidance.
He shared fond memories of Nujoma’s visit to their studio, where he shared stories of the early days of their movement and emphasized maintaining cultural roots, likening a nation without culture to a tree lacking roots. Nombanza called upon all Namibians to honor Nujoma’s legacy by promoting unity beyond political differences.
He extended heartfelt condolences to Nujoma’s family and the Namibian populace, reiterating that the struggle for economic liberation continues as envisioned by Nujoma. “Farewell my commander. Farewell my president,” he expressed fervently.
