Trump Claims India Will Lower Tariffs Amid Trade Scrutiny

US President Trump claims India will reduce tariffs due to exposure of unfair practices. He emphasizes reciprocal tariffs starting April 2 to combat high foreign tariffs against the US. Trump reiterates that nations, particularly India, impose unjustly high tariffs, complicating trade relations.

US President Donald Trump asserted that India has agreed to reduce tariffs due to increased scrutiny on its trade practices. He claimed, “India charges us massive tariffs. Massive. You can’t even sell anything in India…They have agreed, by the way; they want to cut their tariffs way down now because somebody is finally exposing them for what they have done.”

Trump emphasized that starting April 2, reciprocal tariffs would be imposed on countries levying high tariffs on American goods. He remarked, “I had it stopped in my first term and we’re going to really stop it now because it has been very unfair.”

Highlighting economic injustices, Trump stated that the US has faced unfair trade practices globally. He noted, “Because we’ve been ripped off by every country in the world, and now whatever they charge us, they charge us 150-200% (and) we charge them nothing.”

He pointed out that countries like the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada impose significantly higher tariffs compared to the US. He criticized India’s auto tariffs, stating, “India charges us auto tariffs higher than 100 percent,” remarks that align with his previous labeling of India as a “tariff king.”

During discussions alongside Prime Minister Modi, Trump remarked on India’s strong tariff enforcement, saying, “It’s very hard to sell into India because they have trade barriers, very strong tariffs.” He acknowledged the complexity of trade relations but maintained that the practices were not acceptable.

Trump’s remarks reflect a strong stance against what he perceives as unfair global trade practices, particularly regarding India’s tariffs. The introduction of reciprocal tariffs aims to level the playing field, targeting countries that impose high tariffs on American goods. The situation will be closely observed as the enforcement begins on April 2, potentially reshaping US trade dynamics.
