Iran has confirmed the start of gas transit from Turkmenistan to Turkey under a swap agreement, which aims to benefit its national grid and solidify its role as a regional energy hub. Though operational, details remain pending. The agreement is expected to enhance regional energy cooperation, particularly between Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Iran’s oil minister, Mohsen Paknejad, announced that Iran has begun receiving gas from Turkmenistan and is simultaneously delivering the same quantity to Turkey as part of a swap agreement. This gas transit will improve supply to national grid customers in Iran’s northeast, where pressure typically drops due to distance from gas production centers in the south.
The gas swap agreement is expected to strengthen Iran’s position as a significant regional energy hub. Paknejad emphasized the government’s aim to enhance energy diplomacy, noting that while the agreement is operational, further details are pending for public disclosure.
In a February report, Turkmenistan’s state gas company Turkmengas signed a deal to begin gas exports to Turkey through Iran starting March 1. Turkmenistan’s leadership, including Chairman Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, discussed this agreement with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, highlighting its importance in regional energy cooperation.
Both Iran and Turkey have yet to release official statements on the specifics, such as the size and pricing of gas supplies under this agreement. Additionally, it is reported that Turkmengas will utilize Iranian pipeline capacity to export up to 4 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Turkey. Iran has entered multiple gas swap agreements with Turkmenistan, supplying gas to Azerbaijan and Iraq, which reinforces concerns about Turkey’s capacity to use this supply to further enhance its gas imports from Azerbaijan to Europe.
Iran has initiated gas transit from Turkmenistan to Turkey, boosting its national supply, particularly in the northeast where gas pressure is often low. This strengthens Iran’s position as a regional energy hub while fostering energy diplomacy with Turkmenistan and Turkey. However, final details regarding the agreement remain undisclosed. The collaboration is expected to enhance regional energy cooperation and enable Turkey to improve its gas export logistics, particularly towards Europe.
