Sao Tome and Principe Prime Minister Resigns Amid Political Turmoil

Ilza Amado Vaz resigned as Prime Minister of Sao Tome and Principe due to the premature leak of her proposed cabinet list. Her resignation follows the president’s dissolution of the previous government, raising political controversies. The ADI has contested this dissolution, claiming it is unconstitutional.

Ilza Amado Vaz, newly appointed Prime Minister of Sao Tome and Principe, resigned on January 13, 2025, after her proposed cabinet list leaked to the public before informing President Carlos Vila Nova. This resignation follows Vila Nova’s decision to dissolve the previous government led by Patrice Trovoada.

Amado Vaz, who served as the former minister of justice, emphasized in her resignation that her leadership would not support effective public policies or the stable development of the nation due to the lack of institutional collaboration and necessary parliamentary support.

Following the dissolution, Amado Vaz was mandated to submit her government structure by Saturday, which included 12 ministerial positions. However, the ruling Independent Democratic Action Party (ADI) published her proposed list on social media on the same day she submitted it.

The government dissolution has ignited political controversy within Sao Tome and Principe. Trovoada publicly labeled the president’s actions as unconstitutional, and the ADI has since appealed to the Constitutional Court to challenge the decision. Vila Nova’s choice for prime minister, Ilza Amado Vaz, dismissed the party’s earlier nominee, Helio de Almeida, who had a notable background in project management and banking.

The resignation of Ilza Amado Vaz from her role as Prime Minister of Sao Tome and Principe highlights significant political instability following the dissolution of the previous government. As her proposed cabinet information leaked prematurely, it raised concerns regarding effective governance and institutional collaboration, leading to a controversial political climate. The appeal by the ADI regarding the president’s actions further underscores the tensions within the country’s political landscape.
