The European Parliament delegation, led by Reinhold Lopatka and including various representatives, visited the NHRI in Abu Dhabi to assess the UAE’s human rights advancements. The NHRI received commendations for its strategic initiatives and global engagement, showcasing its commitment to promoting and safeguarding human rights.

On February 28, 2025, a high-level delegation from the European Parliament visited the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in Abu Dhabi, where they reviewed the UAE’s advancements in human rights. The delegation recognized the institution’s strategic initiatives aimed at cultivating a human rights-oriented culture and its engagement in regional and global human rights dialogues, particularly with the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).

Maqsoud Kruse, the NHRI’s Chairperson, and Dr. Saeed Al Ghufli, its Secretary-General, welcomed the delegation. Kruse stressed that the visit underscores the increasing significance that international entities are placing on the NHRI’s efforts in advancing and safeguarding human rights, asserting, “This visit reflects the growing importance that international institutions place on the active role of the NHRI in promoting and protecting human rights.”

The delegation, led by Reinhold Lopatka of Spain, included notable representatives such as Abir Al-Sahlani of Sweden and several political advisors. The presence of the EU Ambassador to the UAE, Lucía Berger, added to the meeting’s diplomatic weight. This marked the second visit from the European Parliament in recent years, building on their previous engagement in 2022 and further confirming the NHRI’s commitment to international standards of human rights and its dedication to fostering dialogue and transparency with international partners.

The European Parliament delegation’s visit to the NHRI signifies enhanced global recognition of the UAE’s human rights efforts. The NHRI’s commitment to strategic development and transparency demonstrates its dedication to upholding international human rights standards. This ongoing engagement reflects a growing consensus on the importance of fostering human rights culture both regionally and internationally.
