Sudan’s El Burhan Affirms Conditional Readiness to Cease Hostilities

Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, Sudan’s military leader, expressed readiness to stop fighting under certain conditions during the Arab Summit. He supports the Palestinian statehood and outlines plans for Sudan’s internal stability and political transformation, emphasizing government reform and dialogue for free elections.

Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, addressed the Arab Summit in Cairo, stating his willingness to halt hostilities given specific conditions are met. He strongly affirmed Sudan’s commitment to the Palestinian cause, advocating for an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and opposing any displacement of Palestinians from their land.

El Burhan highlighted Sudan’s continued efforts to restore stability in regions previously controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), noting that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have expelled RSF from several areas and are working to eliminate them further. He accused the RSF of widespread violations against citizens and infrastructure, suggesting they are acting on foreign agendas designed to undermine Sudan.

He confirmed Sudan’s readiness to halt military operations if the RSF withdraws its forces from occupied areas, lifts the siege on El Fasher and surrounding cities in Darfur, and concentrates in designated locations for disarmament. Additionally, he discussed a roadmap for civil and constitutional transformation aimed at facilitating free and fair elections through a national dialogue.

El Burhan concluded by thanking nations that support Sudan, particularly Arab countries for their commitment to Sudan’s unity and its institutional integrity, alongside commendations for the League of Arab States and its Secretary-General’s role in fostering stability in Sudan.

Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan has expressed a conditional willingness to cease hostilities in Sudan while ensuring the withdrawal of the RSF and discussing a political roadmap for transition. His commitment to the Palestinian cause highlights Sudan’s regional diplomatic interests, while ongoing military efforts aim to stabilize the country. El Burhan’s address reflects a multifaceted approach to domestic and international issues, emphasizing stability and reform in Sudan.
