The Rwandan government has recently criticized Germany and Canada for their perceived bias regarding the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Germany for politicizing development cooperation, asserting that Berlin is undermining African-led peace efforts by not holding the DRC accountable for its repeated violations.
According to the Rwandan statement, Germany’s actions only reinforce the DRC’s aggressive posture and prolong the conflict. Kigali raised concerns about the DRC-backed Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a militia group involved in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, emphasizing that Germany must recognize this threat due to its historical responsibility in regional instability.
In addition to Germany, Rwanda summoned Canada’s High Commissioner for comments blaming Kigali for violence in eastern DRC. Rwanda refuted these accusations, insisting that Canada overlooks the atrocities committed by the DRC army (FARDC) and allied militias, unjustly attributing the atrocities to Rwanda instead.
The Rwandan government expressed dissatisfaction with Canada’s dismissal of its legitimate security concerns, particularly regarding the persecution of Congolese Tutsi communities by the FDLR and other forces aligned with the DRC.
Despite rising diplomatic tensions due to clashes in the eastern DRC, Rwanda remains committed to its national security and regional peace efforts. The situation continues to evolve, with accusations exchanged between Rwanda and the DRC regarding support for, or involvement with, rebel groups.
