Zimbabwe Aims for Record Tobacco Harvest of 300 Million Kilograms This Year

Zimbabwe expects a tobacco harvest of 300 million kilograms this year, driven by favorable rainfall and smallholder farmers’ increased output. TIMB chair Patrick Devenish highlighted the successes of these farmers and the importance of support for future production. Tobacco remains crucial for Zimbabwe’s economy, contributing significantly to foreign currency earnings.

Zimbabwe is looking forward to a record tobacco yield of 300 million kilograms this year, attributed to favorable rainfall and increased output from smallholder farmers. This announcement was made by Patrick Devenish, chairperson of the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), during a parliamentary session on agricultural development.

Devenish noted the tobacco crop has benefited from abundant rains since January and indicated that estimates suggest a minimum of 280 million kilograms, with the potential to reach 300 million as further assessments are conducted. He stated, “While we are cautious about making guarantees, we believe a 300-million-kilogramme crop is achievable.”

The optimism in production is linked to smallholder farmers, who have thrived due to the tobacco contracting system, which has improved their yields and quality. Devenish remarked, “A significant part of the industry’s success is due to these farmers. Their yields have risen sharply, and the quality of their tobacco has improved. This has led to the emergence of a new rural middle class.”

Supporting smallholder farmers is viewed as essential for the long-term viability of Zimbabwe’s tobacco industry. Ahead of the 2025 selling season, TIMB has granted licenses to 31 A-Class buyers and 44 contractors, providing a robust market structure for the upcoming sales.

The tobacco sector remains Zimbabwe’s largest agricultural export, crucial for generating foreign currency for the nation. This year, there will be 55 markets accommodating both contract and auction sales, all rigorously inspected and approved by TIMB staff.

Zimbabwe anticipates a significant increase in tobacco production for the upcoming season, highlighting the growing role of smallholder farmers due to enhanced contracting systems. The government’s support for these farmers is seen as vital for the sustainability of the tobacco industry, which remains a key contributor to the country’s export revenue.
