The partnership includes the launch of the One Million Coders initiative and the establishment of an MTN building as a center for AI excellence. This initiative aims to prepare young Ghanaians for global job opportunities in technology.

At the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona, Ghana’s Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MTN Group. This agreement aims to enhance digital skills, artificial intelligence (AI), data governance, and cybersecurity among Ghanaian youth, marking a vital step in the nation’s digital evolution.

The MoU will be effective for a year and establishes a collaborative framework between MTN Group, MTN Ghana, and the Ghanaian government. It is part of the ‘One Million Coders’ initiative, a flagship program from the John Romani Mahama administration designed to equip young Ghanaians with key digital competencies to succeed in an increasingly tech-driven world.

Ghana’s delegation reaffirmed its commitment to cultivating AI and software development talent. The government recognized MTN Group’s significant investments in Ghana, particularly in light of MTN’s 25th anniversary. The newly inaugurated MTN building, donated to the Ghana government, will function as a center for excellence in AI and software development.

“I must say that MTN Group and Mr. Ralph did not hesitate to express their interest in partnering with the government… This agreement will serve as the framework for our collaboration moving forward, leading up to the launch of the One Million Coders program before May 7th this year,” – Hon. Samuel Nartey George, MP, Minister of Communications.

MTN Group CEO, Ralph Mupita, reiterated the company’s commitment to bolstering Ghana’s digital landscape. He stated that building a robust digital ecosystem is essential for achieving Ghana’s socio-economic goals and ensuring local talent development, particularly in software engineering and coding, for global opportunities.

“We are very happy to support the building out of the digital ecosystem that will be a catalyst for growth… [we need] to ensure that young people in Ghana have opportunities not only in Ghana but all over the world,” – Ralph Mupita, President and CEO, MTN Group.

The One Million Coders program is anticipated to formally launch before May 7, 2025, aiming to furnish Ghanaian youth with critical coding and software engineering skills, thereby facilitating access to international job markets.

“As MTN, we are committed to doing what we have said we will do—to support Ghana in its next digital strategy…” – Ebenezer Asante, Non-executive Director, MTN Group.
