Pakistan Unveils Rs20 Billion Relief Package for Ramadan Support

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched a Rs20 billion ($71.4 million) Ramadan relief package to support 4 million families, addressing economic struggles amid declining inflation. Each household will receive Rs5,000 ($17.87) as aid during the month. The government aims for efficient distribution through a digital system, reinforcing its commitment to assist those in need during Ramadan.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a substantial Rs20 billion ($71.4 million) relief package aimed at supporting approximately 4 million families during the forthcoming holy month of Ramadan in Pakistan. This initiative comes as Ramadan is set to begin on Sunday, March 2, 2025, and aims to alleviate the financial pressures faced by households despite a recorded decrease in consumer inflation to 2.4% in January from 24% the previous year.

Under the initiative, each family will receive Rs5,000 ($17.87) to assist with expenses throughout Ramadan. “It is a great blessing of Almighty Allah that inflation has dropped down in this Ramadan as compared to last year,” said Sharif during the launch ceremony in Islamabad on March 1. He stated that the distribution will utilize a digital wallet system to ensure transparency and efficiency across all provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The relief package signifies a vital step as Pakistan navigates the economic recovery pathway following stabilization under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program finalized in the previous year. An IMF mission is scheduled to review the program next week. The finance ministry forecasts a continued decline in consumer inflation, supporting the economic outlook.

Sharif expressed gratitude towards government institutions, international partners, and tech companies that facilitate the distribution process. Ultimately, this support mechanism is designed to ensure that deserving families receive essential aid during Ramadan, a time marked by increased food consumption and community gathering among Muslims.

In conclusion, the Pakistani government’s launch of a Rs20 billion relief package aims to support low-income families during Ramadan, highlighting the administration’s response to economic challenges. The initiative underscores efforts to alleviate inflationary pressures while ensuring financial assistance is distributed effectively through digital means. As Pakistan approaches a crucial review of its economic situation under IMF guidance, this relief program demonstrates the government’s commitment to aiding its citizens during a significant religious observance.
