Senegal plans to summon former president Macky Sall to court following an audit report that uncovered irregularities in the nation’s treasury during his administration. The report indicates severe mismanagement of public finances, claiming that both the public deficit and national debt figures under Sall were significantly understated. Currently residing in Morocco, Sall has dismissed the findings as politically motivated claims.
Government spokesman Moustapha Sarre emphasized that Sall may face serious legal repercussions, describing him as largely responsible for the alleged fiscal misconduct. The audit report highlighted alarming discrepancies, including a budget deficit for 2023 of 12.3%, compared to the 4.9% announced during Sall’s tenure. Sarre stated, “Inevitably he will face justice. He is the person chiefly responsible for the extremely serious acts that were committed. Legal proceedings cannot be avoided.”
In the wake of these findings, current President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, elected in March, has committed to distancing his administration from Sall’s legacy. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, a vocal critic of Sall, recently vowed to investigate the alleged corruption prevalent during the former president’s rule. Notably, several ex-officials associated with Sall have been prosecuted and imprisoned for charges related to fraud and money laundering.
