At the 58th UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to human rights. He highlighted urgent crises, particularly in Palestine and Myanmar, emphasizing the need for immediate international action.
In discussing the situation in Gaza, Malaysia condemned Israel’s breaches of international law and the resulting civilian casualties. Mohamad called for addressing the conflict’s root causes, notably the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, and urged for the implementation of the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion from July 2024.
Malaysia plans to host the 4th Ministerial Meeting of East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD) this year, aimed at supporting sustainable development and empowering Palestinian communities. Additionally, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, Malaysia seeks to enhance ASEAN’s human rights advocacy through the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights.
Regarding the Myanmar crisis, Mohamad advocated for a conducive dialogue environment and reiterated the significance of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as a basis for conflict resolution. Malaysia remains committed to collaborating with the United Nations and other organizations to address global challenges, including climate change and health issues.
