Dr. Stephen Amoah: NPP Not Responsible for Ghana’s Economic Crisis

Dr. Stephen Amoah, former Deputy Minister of Finance, refuted claims of economic mismanagement by the NPP during an interview on GHOne TV’s Hard Talk. He attributes Ghana’s economic challenges to global disruptions and cites positive economic growth rates when the NPP took power in 2016, challenging negative narratives surrounding the current administration’s handling of the economy.

Dr. Stephen Amoah, former Deputy Minister of Finance, has firmly denied accusations that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has mismanaged Ghana’s economy. During an interview on GHOne TV’s Hard Talk program, he stated that what the country is experiencing is an economic crisis arising from external factors, not mismanagement by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.

Amoah countered claims of economic mismanagement by referring to economic indicators dating back to 2016. He emphasized that the current economic issues are the result of global disruptions rather than the policies enacted by the NPP. He noted that the economy was growing at a commendable rate when they assumed office.

“Who told you we mismanaged the economy?” he questioned. “We took over an economy in 2016 growing at 10.4%, with industry at 2.7% and inflation at 15.5%. The economy we inherited was growing almost twice as fast when we were leaving power. Yet, in Ghana, when economic indicators are unfavorable, criticism arises, but positive indicators often go unnoticed.”

Dr. Stephen Amoah defends the NPP’s economic record amidst criticisms, attributing Ghana’s current economic challenges to global factors rather than internal mismanagement. He underscores the positive trends in the economy when they took power and highlights a discrepancy in public perception regarding economic indicators.
