On Wednesday, Mozambique and Zambia formalized an agreement to interconnect their energy systems, enhancing electricity supply across the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). This initiative, spearheaded by Mozambique’s public electricity company, EDM, and Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO), aims to bolster regional energy capacity and security.
The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by António Manda, Permanent Secretary of Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, and Zambian Energy Minister, Makoze Chikote. The anticipated investment for this project stands at approximately $411.5 million.
This project is designed to not only boost energy supply between Mozambique and Zambia but also enhance Mozambique’s role in the regional energy market. The interconnection will enable energy exchanges among SADC members, thus increasing revenue for Mozambique.
The document outlines the development of a 400 kV transmission line extending around 376 kilometers, connecting Matambo Substation in Mozambique with Chipata West Substation in Zambia. This strategic infrastructure aims to ensure reliable electricity distribution between the two nations.
At the signing ceremony, EDM chairperson Joaquim Ou-chim emphasized that this agreement signifies the transition from planning to execution for this significant initiative. “In the current global energy scenario, regional cooperation is no longer an option but a necessity,” he stated, underscoring the importance of projects that drive energy integration across Africa.
