Defending MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin is aiming for a return to racing by the fourth round of the championship, following two significant pre-season crashes. Though he has missed the initial two rounds and confirmed he will skip the upcoming race in Austin, Texas on March 29 and 30, Martin remains hopeful for the event at Lusail, Qatar, scheduled for April 12 and 13.
Martin expressed cautious optimism about his return, stating, “I expect to be in Qatar, but only if it doesn’t pose any risks.” He emphasized the importance of adhering to recovery timelines, warning that rushing could prolong his absence from the track.
The challenges began with a serious crash in Malaysia, resulting in broken bones in his right hand and foot, which kept him from nearly all pre-season testing. Additionally, during a training accident on a supermoto bike, he sustained further injuries, including broken bones in his wrist and foot, as well as rib muscle injuries.
Currently, Martin finds himself 74 points behind six-time world champion Marc Marquez, who has demonstrated a strong start to the season by winning both races and sprints on his factory Ducati. Martin acknowledged the situation, stating, “Marc winning is not something anyone could not have expected.” However, he remains positive about his recovery, mentioning progress in a social media update: “It was a difficult time but now I start to see the light.”
In related MotoGP news, the Yamaha-Pramac team announced that Miguel Oliveira will miss the Austin race due to a left shoulder injury suffered during a crash in Argentina. He is replaced by Augusto Fernandez, a former Moto2 World Champion who shifted to a reserve role with Yamaha this year after two seasons in MotoGP with GasGas-Tech3.
Jorge Martin is focused on returning from injury by the fourth round of the MotoGP championship, emphasizing the need for cautious recovery. With significant injuries from crashes affecting his pre-season preparation, Martin trails behind Marc Marquez but is optimistic about his recovery progress. Meanwhile, Miguel Oliveira will be absent from the upcoming race, with Augusto Fernandez stepping in as a replacement.
