On March 20, the Indian government informed Parliament that 25 Indian nationals are currently sentenced to death in the UAE, though these sentences have not been executed. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, stated this in response to inquiries about Indians facing capital punishment abroad, revealing that a total of 10,152 Indian prisoners, including undertrials, are held in various foreign jails.
The minister underscored that the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad is a priority for the government. He presented data indicating that Indians facing death sentences are located in eight different countries, with 25 in the UAE, 11 in Saudi Arabia, six in Malaysia, and others in Kuwait, Indonesia, Qatar, the US, and Yemen. Singh emphasized the role of Indian Missions in providing support and legal assistance, ensuring consular access, and helping navigate legal processes regarding convictions.
Regarding executions of Indian nationals over the past five years, Singh noted that executions did occur in Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. In 2024 alone, three Indians were executed in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and one in Zimbabwe. In the previous year, both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia carried out five executions each, with one additional case in Malaysia. However, the UAE has not officially documented any executions involving Indian nationals from 2020 to 2024, according to informal reports from the Indian Mission.
The Indian government continues to advocate for the safety and well-being of its nationals abroad, providing crucial support in legal matters for those facing capital punishment.
