This marks Costner’s second visit to Cuba, where he is working on a project related to underwater archaeology. Díaz-Canel expressed pleasure at meeting Costner and highlighted the Cuban people’s appreciation for him, citing his artistic contributions and advocacy for social and environmental issues.
Costner shared his positive experiences in Cuba, stating, “It’s been a dream for a long time” and mentioned his extensive studies on the Caribbean region. During his visit, he explored the Castillo de La Real Fuerza Museum in Havana, where he expressed admiration for its underwater archaeology collections and colonial architecture.
Furthermore, Díaz-Canel invited Costner to return to Cuba to explore other archaeological sites, such as those in Santiago de Cuba. Accompanying Costner was Alejandro Mirabal, a renowned underwater archaeologist known for his work in preserving underwater heritage. Costner noted their longstanding friendship, which began over a decade ago in Mozambique.
Costner’s first visit to Cuba was in 2001 during the screening of his film “13 Days,” where he unexpectedly met Fidel Castro. Reflecting on that experience, he described it as “an experience for life,” emphasizing the importance of fostering connections between cultures.
