The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (IELP) held its 43rd General Assembly from March 8-9 in Loma Plata, where Rev. Alceu Alton Figur was reelected for a three-year term as president. This year’s assembly theme was “Guided,” referencing Romans 8:14, reflecting the church’s mission to lead its community under divine guidance.
President Figur expressed his gratitude for the reelection, emphasizing the church’s reliance on God’s support amidst contemporary challenges. He acknowledged issues such as the erosion of family values and attacks on Christian beliefs but noted the blessing of having fully-served parishes and ongoing missions throughout Paraguay. He stated, “We seek to continue leading and guiding God’s people under His grace and love.”
First elected in 2022, President Figur is also the pastor of Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Asunción and serves as the Latin America representative on the International Lutheran Council (ILC) board of directors. His reelection was positively received by the ILC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, who expressed hope for continued blessings on President Figur’s ministry.
The assembly also included elections for various church positions and the dedication of a new Lutheran mission church in Loma Plata, hosted by the assembly. President Figur commits to serving this mission, which is 500 kilometers from his home, visiting bi-weekly.
The IELP’s recent assembly reaffirmed Rev. Alceu Alton Figur’s leadership for another three years amidst modern challenges in faith and family values. The church emphasizes divine guidance in its mission and celebrations included the inauguration of a new mission church. Figur’s dual role within the church and the ILC reflects a commitment to nurturing Lutheran faith in Paraguay and beyond.
