Máximo Napa Castro, a Peruvian fisherman, was rescued after drifting for 95 days in the Pacific Ocean. Napa, aged 61, departed from Marcona on December 7, 2024, but faced severe weather conditions that diverted his course. He was located by an Ecuadorian fishing vessel on March 11, 2025, in northern Peruvian waters, critically dehydrated and near death.

During a heartfelt interview, Napa described his struggle for survival, which included drinking rainwater and resorting to insects, birds, and a turtle for sustenance. Having gone without food for the last 15 days, he attributed his endurance to thoughts of his family, particularly mentioning his mother and newborn granddaughter. He expressed, “I thought of my mother and my newborn granddaughter every day. I didn’t want to die for them.”

Napa’s daughter, Inés Napa Torres, publicly thanked the Ecuadorian fishermen for their rescue efforts on social media, highlighting their critical role in saving her father. Before his rescue, the family, along with other fishermen, had been actively searching for Napa. In a post dated March 3, she shared the family’s emotional turmoil while maintaining hope, stating, “We never imagined we’d go through this… but we will not lose hope, Dad.”

After being rescued, Napa received medical attention at the Hospital Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in Paita, located near the Peru-Ecuador border. Following his recovery, he was released from the hospital on Saturday, allowing him to reunite with his family.

Máximo Napa Castro’s extraordinary survival story highlights the human spirit’s resilience under extreme conditions.
