The GJA’s President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, called for immediate government action against illegal mining at a press conference, emphasizing the destruction it causes and urging stricter law enforcement. He acknowledged the government’s efforts while insisting on continued vigilance, expressing the GJA’s full support for President Mahama’s commitment to combating galamsey and promoting national heritage.
Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), reinforced the association’s strong opposition to illegal mining, known as galamsey, urging government action. At a press conference on March 13, 2025, he highlighted the urgent need for strict enforcement of mining laws and called upon journalists to help protect Ghana’s heritage.
Dwumfour stated, “Ladies and gentlemen, the galamsey menace is still with us. Our forest reserves, water bodies, and farmlands are being destroyed and degraded with reckless abandon, all in the name of gold mining. In the mining communities, law and order are crumbling…” He pointed out that illegal mining is linked with human rights abuses and severe disruptions in community governance.
He acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in confronting illegal mining challenges but stressed the need for ongoing vigilance. He expressed hope that the Ministry would maintain its momentum, saying, “the GJA will be monitoring its actions and inactions towards the fight.”
Dwumfour praised President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to tackling the issue of illegal mining, affirming the GJA’s support for the government’s initiatives. He urged Mahama to fulfill his promise, asserting, “Mr. President, the time to act is NOW!!!”
Emphasizing March as Ghana’s National Heritage Month, Dwumfour encouraged media personnel to leverage their platforms to educate the public about the nation’s cultural identity. He stated, “The media plays a vital role in shaping our national identity and promoting our cultural diversity. It is our duty to promote our heritage.”
The GJA stresses the critical need for immediate action against illegal mining, highlighting the destruction caused and urging government enforcement of mining regulations. The unity and commitment of journalists are vital in advocating for the protection of Ghana’s environment and cultural heritage. The association stands ready to support governmental efforts in ending galamsey and promoting national identity during Heritage Month.
