Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi, a national sprinter, is a primary candidate to represent Malaysia in the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games (Universiade) in Germany. This was announced by the head of the Malaysian contingent, Datuk Assoc Prof Ts Dr Mohd Hafiz Yusoff, who emphasized that final selection is contingent upon discussions with the National Sports Council (MSN) to prevent scheduling conflicts with other competitions.
It is essential to evaluate Azeem’s current performance and fitness level for potential selection. “If his performance is ok and he is free from injury, God willing, we will bring the best team to Germany this year,” stated Dr Mohd Hafiz following the launch of the Malaysia University Sports Council (MASUM) programme.
To prepare for the Universiade, the Malaysian Contingent Committee plans to conduct an athlete selection workshop to shortlist 60 competitors. Malaysia aims to compete in seven out of the 19 events, including archery, athletics, badminton, diving, artistic gymnastics, swimming, and taekwondo.
Dr Mohd Hafiz highlighted that the contingent’s target and achievements will be disclosed later as they refine their athlete selections based on input from MSN and the University Sports Excellence Centre. He noted that funding for the trip to Germany is significant, emphasizing the need to participate only in events with winning potential.
