Libya’s Justice Ministry is reviewing prisoner exchange agreements with countries, including China and Ethiopia. The Permanent Committee aims to facilitate Libyan prisoners serving sentences in Libya after recent diplomatic visits. Plans to build a comprehensive database for prisoners abroad are also underway.
The Permanent Committee for Monitoring the Conditions and Issues of Libyan Prisoners Abroad convened its inaugural meeting for the year under the leadership of Minister of Justice Halima Ibrahim. The agenda focused on various draft memorandums of understanding and prisoner exchange agreements involving countries like China and Ethiopia.
Further, ongoing negotiations were evaluated following the Deputy General of the Ministry of Justice’s visits to several countries including Lebanon, Egypt, Malta, Tunisia, and Turkey. These discussions aim to facilitate the transfer of Libyan prisoners to serve their sentences domestically.
Additionally, the committee emphasized the establishment of a comprehensive database cataloging all prisoners in nations where the Ministry has legal attachés. There are plans to broaden this database to incorporate information from additional countries.
