Saudi Arabia Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty in Sahara Conflict

Saudi Arabia expressed its strong backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara during the Moroccan-Saudi Joint Commission on March 5. The Kingdom considers the autonomy initiative the sole solution for the regional conflict, affirming the need for respect towards Morocco’s sovereignty. This confirmation came after recent diplomatic activities between Saudi Arabia and Algeria. Saudi Arabia also praised King Mohammed VI’s efforts for Al-Quds Acharif’s preservation.

On March 5, the Saudi Arabian and Moroccan Foreign Ministers convened the 14th session of the Moroccan-Saudi Joint Commission in Mecca. The meeting concluded with Saudi Arabia reaffirming its dedication to Morocco’s territorial integrity, supporting the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, and endorsing the autonomy initiative as the sole feasible resolution for this regional dispute. This support emphasizes the necessity of honoring Morocco’s sovereignty in any resolution to the conflict.

This renewed support for Morocco followed a meeting in Cairo on March 4, where Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan met with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, alongside a visit from Algeria’s Upper House President Salah Goudjil to the Saudi ambassador in Algiers. The proximity of these meetings demonstrates the active engagement among North African nations regarding the Sahara issue.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia commended King Mohammed VI’s ongoing initiatives aimed at preserving the identity of Al-Quds Acharif. As President of the Committee for the Defense of Al-Quds Acharif, his efforts to uphold the city as a beacon of tolerance and coexistence among religions were praised. The Kingdom also acknowledged the humanitarian and social projects led by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Acharif Agency, supporting al-Maqdessi resilience.

Saudi Arabia has reiterated its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara during the recent Moroccan-Saudi Joint Commission meeting. This affirmation emphasizes the autonomy plan as the only viable resolution. The engagement with Algeria further highlights the complex political dynamics in the region. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia praises Morocco’s King Mohammed VI for his efforts in preserving the cultural identity of Al-Quds Acharif.
