Obasanjo’s remarks were part of discussions surrounding his new books, “Lest We Forget: Slavery, Slave Trade, Emancipation and Reparation” and “Nigeria: Past and Future,” where he lamented Africa’s struggle to recover from the historical impacts of slave trade.
In his address, Obasanjo noted that lingering issues from slavery and colonialism hinder Africa’s progress. Additionally, Eghosa Osaghae, Director-General of the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs, highlighted the alarming statistic that over 12.5 million people in Africa are currently trapped in modern slavery, accounting for about 60% of the global total.
Osaghae called for a second independence characterized by meaningful decolonization so that Africans can confront the persistent challenges of colonization. He emphasized that true liberation requires unity among African nations, aligning with Obasanjo’s vision for a liberated and progressive future.
