During a recent meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, Iranian envoy Naziri Asl criticized Western nations for enacting censure resolutions against Iran based on unfounded allegations regarding nuclear weapon aspirations. He highlighted the failure of these nations to adhere to their commitments under the JCPOA, particularly following the US withdrawal in 2018 and the subsequent inability of France, Germany, and Britain to mitigate the impacts of this exit.
Naziri Asl asserted that Iran’s decision to reduce certain commitments was a response to these failures, authorized under Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, which allow for remedial action in the event of non-compliance by other parties. He emphasized that any cessation of Iran’s remedial measures is contingent upon the effective and verifiable lifting of sanctions by the US, EU, and the other European parties involved in the agreement.
He stated, “Experience has shown that the policy of pressure pursued by certain parties is not only ineffective but also counterproductive.” Furthermore, he dismissed any efforts by European nations to invoke the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism, arguing that their own violations of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA render them illegitimate in this regard.
Naziri Asl added that “The E3 cannot pursue the same legal course against Iran, as such an action contradicts…international law among civilized nations,” labeling any attempts to activate the snapback mechanism as “legally baseless, unjust, and strongly rejected.” With the impending ‘Termination Day’ for sanctions set for October 2025, he called on IAEA member states to uphold the provisions of Resolution 2231, highlighting the risks of undermining years of diplomatic effort.
He reaffirmed Iran’s stance against nuclear weapons, stating that the nation rejects weapons of mass destruction on ideological and strategic grounds, considering them a threat to global peace. Despite developments, European powers are contemplating the activation of the snapback mechanism, sparked by Iran’s recent remedial actions, which were previously attempted by the Trump administration in 2020 but faced global opposition.
