Morocco’s Ministry of Health has reported a decline in measles cases, locally termed “Bouhmroun”, for the fifth consecutive week. The decrease is attributed to continuous efforts aimed at curbing the virus’s spread. From February 24 to March 2, cases dropped by 13%, totaling 2,481 diagnosed cases so far, building on the 14.9% reduction from the previous week where 2,863 cases were noted.
The success in reducing measles cases has been credited to the dedication of healthcare workers, effective coordination among stakeholders, and public involvement in vaccination drives. These initiatives are part of a broader national campaign focused on verifying vaccination status and making essential vaccines accessible.
Despite the positive trends in case reduction, the Ministry emphasized the need for ongoing vigilance regarding vaccination coverage, which varies across provinces. Citizens are urged to participate in national measles control efforts and to recognize vaccination as a key preventive measure against the disease and its severe complications.
According to Health Minister Amine Tahraoui, since October 2023, Morocco has reported a total of 19,515 measles cases, with fatalities reaching 107, representing 0.55% of cases. Notably, half of the deaths occurred in children under 12, highlighting the heightened risk for younger individuals.
