Marquino Mindley Leads Jamaica Scorpions Against Guyana Harpy Eagles

Marquino Mindley takes on the role of captain for Jamaica Scorpions against Guyana Harpy Eagles after John Campbell’s injury. Mindley expresses excitement for the challenge. The Scorpions sit fifth in the league, while aiming to bounce back from previous losses. Mindley has performed well this season and seeks to capitalize on his opportunities moving forward.

Marquino Mindley is set to lead the Jamaica Scorpions against reigning champions Guyana Harpy Eagles in a pivotal regional first-class match at Sabina Park. This four-day contest begins at 10:00am on Wednesday, marking Mindley’s debut as captain, following the absence of regular captain John Campbell due to injury.

At 30 years old, Mindley, who has been instrumental as the team’s pace bowling leader, expressed excitement for this new challenge. He stated, “It’s a new challenge, and I’m just looking forward to it. I’ve always been among the leaders in the team… it’s a similar role and the same everything going forward,” as reported by the Jamaica Observer.

Head coach Robert Haynes affirmed the squad’s backing for Mindley, highlighting his extensive experience. Haynes noted, “Mindley… is going to captain the side, and he has the support of the players.”

Currently, the Scorpions hold fifth place in the league with 32.6 points after recording one win and two losses, while the Harpy Eagles lead with 57.6 points. Trinidad and Tobago Red Force and Leeward Islands Hurricanes follow in second and third place, respectively, with point totals close behind.

Mindley remains optimistic about the team’s ability to rebound from recent setbacks. He explained, “We lost those two games and the guys are disappointed about those, but going into this game their confidence is up. We have our plans, so it’s just to stick to those plans longer and, hopefully, we can come out victorious in this game.”

He acknowledged Guyana’s strong performance in the format, but emphasized the Scorpions’ potential, stating, “Guyana are very good in this format… it’s just for our players to stick to the process and the results will follow.”

Although Mindley’s previous Test experience is limited, having played only two overs in late 2022, he has made his mark in this season’s four-day matches, taking eight wickets at an average of 18.12. He expressed confidence in his preparation, saying, “I’m a person who trusts the process… I just have to grab it with both hands when the opportunity comes.”

Marquino Mindley is stepping into the captaincy role for the Jamaica Scorpions as they prepare to face the Guyana Harpy Eagles, showing eagerness and leadership. Despite the challenges of previous losses, Mindley and the team’s confidence remains strong, supported by their coach. With high performance in recent matches, Mindley is aiming to cement his place in both the regional league and potentially return to Test cricket in the future.
