The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and the Ijaw National Congress (INC) have expressed serious concerns regarding political unrest in Rivers State, warning that they may halt oil production in the Niger Delta if Governor Siminalayi Fubara is impeached. These groups see a recent 48-hour ultimatum from the House of Assembly for Fubara to present the 2025 budget as a planned attack on the governor’s stability, emphasizing that such actions could destabilize the region.
IYC leaders, Prince Datolu Sukubo and Tamunokuro Dango, have urged President Bola Tinubu and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to intervene quickly to avoid further crises. They argue that any instability would significantly impact governance and threaten the energy security of the nation, given the state’s critical economic role.
The IYC cautions that if Rivers State’s economic rights are compromised, they will retaliate by impacting Nigeria’s economy. Concurrently, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) announced a stakeholders’ meeting on March 5, 2025, to prepare for the upcoming Local Council Elections, involving various community leaders and organizations.
