Jefferson T. Koijee, Secretary General of the CDC, urges U.S. President Trump to intervene in Liberia’s political crisis, criticizing President Boakai’s government for corruption and human rights abuses. Koijee highlights the mismanagement of aid and calls for investigations, while warning against deportations of Liberians fleeing political persecution.
Jefferson T. Koijee, Secretary General of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), addressed a letter to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, requesting U.S. intervention in the ongoing political crisis in Liberia. He critiques the administration of President Joseph Boakai for undermining democracy and engaging in unconstitutional actions.
In his letter, dated March 3, Koijee highlighted serious issues under Boakai’s leadership, including rampant corruption and human rights violations. He accused the government of actions that destabilize the political climate, further entrenching fear and suppression of dissent.
Koijee specifically condemned the alleged removal of Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa as unconstitutional and pointed to financial misconduct, including the manipulation of the national budget and misuse of millions allocated for development. Such actions have reportedly hindered access to basic services for citizens.
He also raised concerns about human rights abuses, citing over 100 deaths linked to police brutality and state-sponsored violence. Koijee noted the lack of accountability for these acts, which he believes further destabilizes Liberia.
In addition, Koijee highlighted that foreign aid, particularly USAID funds, has allegedly been misused to support the ruling Unity Party’s election efforts. He demanded a thorough investigation into this misuse and called for transparency in U.S. aid management in Liberia.
Koijee urged the U.S. government to reconsider deportations of 1,563 Liberians currently in the U.S., many of whom fled political persecution. He warned that returning them could subject them to danger in the unstable political climate of Liberia.
Lastly, he expressed appreciation for Trump’s initiatives to uphold religious values and combat harmful ideologies. Koijee urged the president to advocate against corruption and human rights abuses in Liberia, supporting the populace’s quest for democracy and stability.
Koijee’s open letter to President Trump underscores the significant challenges facing Liberia, including government corruption and human rights violations. His appeal for U.S. intervention highlights a call for international support to restore democracy and provide accountability in Liberia’s governance. Additionally, addressing the potential dangers posed by deportations reflects the urgent need for humanitarian considerations in U.S. policy toward Liberia.
