A Malaysian defense delegation visited the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, coinciding with joint air combat exercises with the Royal Malaysian Air Force. The visit underscores growing defense ties between Malaysia and France, showcasing military capabilities and interoperability during exercises in the Indo-Pacific region.
On March 2, Malaysia’s Defense Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin and senior military officials boarded the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle during a visit aligned with a joint air combat exercise. The French delegation included Ambassador Axel Cruau and Rear Admiral Jacques Mallard, expressing France’s commitment to enhancing defense cooperation with Malaysia.
The Malaysian delegation comprised key military figures, such as General Datuk Hj Mohd Nizam bin Hj Jaafar, the Chief of Defence Forces and Admiral Datuk Zulhelmy bin Ithnain of the Royal Malaysian Navy. Dato’ Seri Mohamed praised the exercise and briefings highlighting the capabilities of the Charles de Gaulle and its air wing.
The French Navy and Malaysian Air Force conducted a joint exercise involving four Rafale jets and various Malaysian aircraft, including Su-30MKMs and F/A-18Ds. The Malaysian officials observed important aircraft operations aboard the Charles de Gaulle.
The French Embassy remarked that such exercises enhance military interoperability, strengthen cooperative mechanisms, and highlight France’s dedication to maintaining security in the Indo-Pacific region. This training exemplifies France’s strategy of deploying military assets regularly while advocating for international law and sovereign rights.
The Charles de Gaulle’s presence off Malaysia follows a recent port visit in the Philippines, after which it engaged in joint patrols with the Philippine military in the South China Sea. Earlier, the carrier participated in Exercise LA PEROUSE 25 with the Malaysian Navy, focusing on maritime security and counter-illicit activities.
The visit of Malaysian officials to the Charles de Gaulle reinforces France and Malaysia’s defense partnership, emphasizing joint military exercises that enhance interoperability. The active engagement highlights France’s strategic deployment in the Indo-Pacific region, reaffirming its commitment to international maritime cooperation and reinforcing regional security efforts.
