Brazil hosted the inaugural BRICS Sherpas meeting as the bloc’s president, focusing on strengthening multilateralism and addressing global governance. Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira emphasized the growing role of emerging economies and the need for a multipolar world. Key discussions aim to enhance cooperation among developing nations and promote social, economic, and environmental agendas.
Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira inaugurated the first BRICS Sherpas meeting on Tuesday, marking Brazil’s presidency of the bloc. He emphasized that the solution to the crisis in multilateralism lies in promoting stronger and more inclusive multilateral frameworks. Vieira noted significant changes to the international order, stressing that emerging economies require a more substantial role in global decision-making.
BRICS aims to advance a just, inclusive, and sustainable world order. Vieira articulated the necessity of a multipolar world, acknowledging that it is both an emerging reality and a shared goal. He suggested that a more equitable global system must include the voices of BRICS, reflecting the aspirations of the Global South.
The meeting at Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia consists of two days of discussions focused on establishing a fairer multipolar world. This gathering of chief negotiators is the first since BRICS expanded last year to welcome Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia. Associated members include Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
Vieira highlighted the necessity for developing nations to take a central role in the discussions on global governance. He pointed out that economic protectionism threatens to exacerbate inequalities and urged BRICS to promote an open multilateral trade system catering to the Global South’s needs.
The minister called for advancements in alternative financial mechanisms, such as the New BRICS Development Bank, which serves as a crucial source of funding for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging economies.
During its presidency, Brazil will prioritize collaboration with the Global South and focus on social, economic, and environmental agendas across six key areas: health, trade, climate change, artificial intelligence, multilateral security system reform, and institutional strengthening of BRICS. A special session on the meeting’s second day will feature Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, followed by a summary of the discussions.
The first BRICS Sherpas meeting, led by Brazil, aims to address crucial issues affecting global governance and multilateralism. With discussions emphasizing the inclusion of developing economies and advocating for equitable systems, Brazil is dedicated to fostering a multipolar world. The BRICS agenda focuses on addressing social and economic disparities, while promoting sustainable development and alternative financial frameworks among its member states.
