Malaysia has reaffirmed its position for the total elimination of nuclear weapons, citing it as the sole guarantee against their usage. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan highlighted the importance of advancing disarmament amidst rising global tensions during the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He called upon nuclear states to honor their commitments while emphasizing Malaysia’s dedication to a nuclear weapon-free Southeast Asia.
Malaysia has reiterated its strong advocacy for the complete abolishment of nuclear weapons, identifying it as the only definitive safeguard against their utilization. In a recorded statement, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan highlighted the urgent need for global disarmament in light of rising geopolitical conflicts during the 2025 High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva, Switzerland.
He emphasized that the persistent presence of nuclear weapons, alongside the deterioration of arms control agreements and new security threats, highlights the critical necessity for urgent action within this vital assembly. Mohamad urged nuclear-armed countries to fulfill their disarmament promises and to engage sincerely in dialogue aimed at fostering multilateral disarmament progress.
As the current chair of ASEAN, Mohamad stressed Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring that Southeast Asia continues to be a nuclear weapon-free zone, in alignment with the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ). He also expressed optimism for advancements in related areas such as negative security assurances and preventing an arms race in outer space.
In his capacity as the fifth president of the CD for this year, Malaysia plans to guide discussions towards achieving measurable advancements in nuclear disarmament initiatives and frameworks, focusing on concrete results and effective strategies to address global disarmament challenges.
