Brazil will host the upcoming BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025. As the leading nation of this bloc of emerging economies for the year, Brazil intends to emphasize global governance reforms and enhance cooperation among countries in the Global South. This commitment was highlighted in a government announcement.
BRICS, formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded a year later with South Africa joining. Initially created to balance the influence of the G7 nations, BRICS has recently welcomed Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the UAE, and plans to include Saudi Arabia. Countries such as Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have also applied for membership.
Indonesia has become one of the 11 official BRICS members, and Nigeria has achieved “partner country” status, which was introduced during the 2024 summit in Kazan. Brazil confirmed that partner countries would be invited to the summit and could join additional discussions if approved by all member states.
Amid these developments, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira emphasized the significance of upcoming decisions on development and cooperation that could enhance the lives of BRICS member citizens, stating, “We will make crucial decisions for development, cooperation, and improving the lives of all the inhabitants of these countries.” – AP.
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on BRICS nations should they undermine the US dollar’s position. In response, BRICS leaders are determined to create an alternative payment system that operates independently of the dollar.
The upcoming BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro marks a significant opportunity for Brazil to lead discussions on global governance and cooperation among developing nations. With expanding membership and partnerships, BRICS aims to establish a robust framework to improve the socioeconomic conditions of its members while facing external pressures, especially from the United States regarding economic independence.
