Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni noted the contradictions in DEME’s behavior, as they criticized the bidding’s transparency while being the sole bidder. He expressed that various sectors lobbied to have technical standards lowered for personal gain, and that false accusations against the government regarding corruption and stringent negotiations are common.
Iñaki Arreseygor from the National Agency of Ports and Navigation defended the tender’s integrity, stating that 11 parties initially showed interest but later withdrew without explanation. DEME previously suggested that the bidding process was biased in favor of Jan de Nul, the former licensee, which refrained from bidding this time. Adorni highlighted that despite multiple inquiries from 11 interested companies, none ultimately submitted proposals.
