Qatar reaffirms its commitment to Lebanon’s reconstruction and military support during a meeting between Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. Qatar aims to assist in rebuilding efforts, reinforce sovereignty, and develop Lebanon’s oil and gas sector. President Aoun expresses deep appreciation for Qatar’s significant support amidst Lebanon’s challenges, particularly through partnerships in energy exploration.
On February 5, 2025, during a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at Baabda Palace, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to Lebanon. He stated that Qatar intends to actively participate in Lebanon’s reconstruction efforts and emphasized the importance of establishing a new Lebanese government that aligns with the aspirations of its people.
Al Thani stressed Qatar’s ongoing support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and the implementation of UN Resolution 1701, which safeguards Lebanon’s sovereignty. He condemned violations of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, which was previously established after a 14-month conflict between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, emphasizing the need for Israel to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon.
Lebanese President Aoun expressed gratitude for Qatar’s steadfast support during Lebanon’s toughest moments, highlighting its vital contributions, especially in bolstering the economy. He acknowledged Qatar’s role in the development of Lebanon’s oil and gas sector and expressed eagerness to resume exploration activities with France’s TotalEnergies following a 2023 partnership agreement.
In 2023, Qatar signed a pact with Lebanon allowing its state-owned QatarEnergy to collaborate with TotalEnergies and Italy’s ENI for oil and gas exploration in two maritime blocks off Lebanon’s coast. During his visit, Al Thani also engaged with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to reinforce diplomatic ties.
Lebanon has faced significant challenges in recent years, including economic distress and conflicts with Israel, necessitating international support for reconstruction and development. Qatar has emerged as a key ally, promising assistance specifically targeting Lebanon’s economic and military stability. The country’s strategic partnerships, especially in the oil and gas sector, aim to revitalize Lebanon’s energy resources, thus fostering economic recovery.
Qatar has pledged ongoing support for Lebanon, particularly in rebuilding efforts and military assistance. The commitment to support the formation of a new government and respect for sovereignty through the enforcement of international resolutions highlights the depth of this bilateral relationship. Furthermore, cooperation in the oil and gas sector signals a positive step towards economic rejuvenation. Overall, Qatar’s role remains crucial for Lebanon’s stability and prosperity.
