Iran and Iraq Strengthen Cooperation for Regional Security and Stability

Iran and Iraq agreed to enhance their cooperation to boost regional security during a joint press conference in Tehran. Key discussions focused on political and economic ties amid commitments to support stability in West Asia. Additionally, Iraq denied allegations of helping Iran evade oil sanctions, emphasizing its transparency in oil export operations.

On February 4, Iran and Iraq committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation aimed at bolstering security and stability in the West Asia region. This announcement followed a joint press conference in Tehran attended by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, who discussed improving their political and economic relations.

Qalibaf emphasized the shared objective of fostering peace in the region, indicating that the strong ties between Iran and Iraq at the governmental and parliamentary levels should be leveraged to support the resistance front and uphold the dignity of the Muslim world. He reiterated Iran’s readiness to back regional initiatives.

Mashhadani affirmed the importance of their discussions, which centered on border security, economic collaboration, and overall regional stability. He assured that Iraq would uphold its Arab and Islamic principles and maintain openness in its international relations, indicating a willingness to support Iran as a neighboring ally.

In a separate announcement, Iraq denied involvement in circumventing sanctions against Iran by purchasing or re-exporting Iranian crude oil. The Iraqi Oil Ministry’s State Organization for Marketing of Oil stated that all oil exports are conducted with strict adherence to international regulations, ensuring transparency and compliance with global standards.

The organization further committed to transparency by promising to disclose the identity of vessels involved in transporting oil products from Iraq, thereby building trust with international stakeholders involved in the oil trade.

The recent agreement between Iran and Iraq comes at a time of heightened tensions in the West Asia region, where security and political cooperation among Muslim-majority countries is critical. The strengthening of ties is viewed as a means to enhance regional stability against external challenges. Both nations recognize the significance of close political and economic relations in confronting shared challenges and maintaining peace in a volatile region.

Iran and Iraq’s renewed pledge for enhancing bilateral cooperation signifies a strategic move towards ensuring stability and security in West Asia. Their discussions underscore a commitment to joint initiatives that promote peace while affirming Iraq’s dedication to maintaining its principles and transparency in international trade practices. By fostering closer ties, both countries aim to strengthen their roles in the broader Muslim community and resist external pressures.
