The Senate has mourned the previous Speaker of the Home of Representatives, Ghali Na'Abba, who died on Wednesday on the age of 65 in Abuja.
The Senate noticed a minute's silence throughout Saturday's plenary session following a movement by Senate Deputy Chairman Senator Jibrin Barau on the demise of the late chairman.
Barau was the chairman of the Home Appropriations Committee throughout Na'Abba's tenure as Speaker of the Home between 1999 and 2003.
Barau mentioned that in his tenure as Speaker of the Home of Representatives, Na'Abba stood sturdy for the independence of the legislature from authorities.
He mentioned the previous Speaker was instrumental within the profitable launch of the Home of Representatives by putting in all the mandatory constructions required to encourage a brand new legislature to hold out its duties.
He known as on the Senate to honor Na'Abba's contributions to the event of the nation's legislature by observing a minute's silence.
Barau mentioned: “That is to formally inform this August assembly of the passing away of the Founder and Speaker of the Home of Representatives of the Fourth Republic, Rt. Hon. Ghali Na'Abba, who died on Wednesday. “He died in Abuja and was buried in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.
“He was the Speaker of the Home of Representatives between 1999 and 2003. He fought to determine the mandatory construction for the ascension of the Home of Representatives of the Fourth Republic. He was a tenacious fighter who stood for the independence of the legislature.
“He’ll at all times be remembered for the sacrifice he made to make sure that the Home of Representatives was positioned in the perfect place to satisfy its features. He needs to be honored by this distinguished Senate for his contributions to the event of the legislature of this nation. I hereby urge {that a} minute's silence be noticed in his honour.”
Supporting the movement, Senator Adamu Aliero, a member of the Individuals's Democratic Social gathering from Kebbi State, mentioned the late Na'Ábba performed a distinguished function within the Fourth Republic as Speaker of the Home of Representatives.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, mentioned Na’Abba was a pillar within the protection of the independence of the legislature originally of the fourth republic.
He recalled that it was throughout Na'Abba's tenure that complete guidelines for the legislature had been formulated.
