The Frelimo Party of Mozambique elected Daniel Chapo as its president during a recent extraordinary meeting, reinstating the traditional structure where the party leader also serves as head of state. Chapo received overwhelming support from the Central Committee, urging unity and collaboration towards achieving national peace and development. Nyusi, his predecessor, encouraged patience as Chapo undertakes his duties.
At an extraordinary meeting of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party held in Maputo, President Daniel Chapo was elected as the new leader of the party, reverting to the traditional structure of the presidency. This change follows a brief period under former President Filipe Nyusi, who led Frelimo for a few months. Since Mozambique’s independence in 1975, it has been customary for the President of the Republic to also serve as President of Frelimo.
The voting involved 243 members of the Central Committee, with 241 in favor of Chapo and two ballots being blank. In his inaugural speech, Chapo expressed gratitude towards the committee for their confidence and emphasized the challenges ahead, seeking support from Frelimo members to foster peace, national unity, and development. He acknowledged that no individual can successfully lead Mozambique single-handedly.
Congratulating Chapo, outgoing President Filipe Nyusi reflected on leading Frelimo through challenging times while maintaining the party’s power. He urged party members to allow Chapo time to address national issues. Chapo, now the sixth president of Frelimo since its establishment in 1962, is notable for the survival of four former presidents, showcasing the party’s adept management of leadership transitions.
The Central Committee is currently in the process of electing a new general secretary and members of the secretariat, indicating ongoing organizational changes within the party.
Daniel Chapo’s election as Frelimo President marks a return to the historical practice of combining the roles of party and state leadership in Mozambique since 1975. His commitment to collaboration for national development is crucial in addressing the country’s challenges. The ongoing elections for the party’s general secretary further signal a crucial phase for Frelimo’s governance structure.
