Vietnam Strengthens Diplomatic Relations and International Cooperation Efforts

Vietnam’s diplomatic efforts included meetings with Lao officials to strengthen ties, discussions on trade agreements, assurances of a stable business environment, and actions against fraud. Moreover, Vietnam is advocating for peaceful resolutions to global conflicts and will host a significant ASEAN forum with wide participation.

On February 13, Party General Secretary To Lam welcomed Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane in Hanoi. They discussed the significant advancements in Vietnam-Laos relations, which have benefited both nations.

State President Luong Cuong also received Phomvihane, noting that this was the minister’s first international visit in his new role. He expressed confidence in Laos’ ability to overcome current challenges under the leadership of its government.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Phomvihane on his new position, emphasizing the potential for enhanced cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and Laos, leveraging Phomvihane’s foreign affairs experience.

During the same meeting, PM Chinh discussed expediting negotiations for a free trade agreement with the Southern Common Market, MERCOSUR. He highlighted the importance of augmenting trade and investment that aligns with the two nations’ strategic partnership, aiming to realize mutual benefits.

Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assured that the state apparatus restructuring would not disrupt Vietnam’s business climate. This restructuring aims to align governance with modern requirements, ensuring efficiency and capacity.

In response to queries about handling repatriated Vietnamese from the US, Hang reiterated that Vietnam is following agreements for accepting nationals deported under U.S. initiatives against illegal immigration.

Regarding international conflicts, Hang affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to engage in dialogues to find peaceful solutions to the Russia-Ukraine situation, aligning with a proposal made by PM Chinh.

Vietnam is facilitating foreign nationals’ entry and residence as part of its tourism promotion strategy, highlighted in the ministry’s policy updates on visa exemptions for specific countries.

Vietnam seeks to collaborate with the US on various practical cooperation areas, like health, environmental issues, and disaster relief, to strengthen bilateral ties.

The ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) 2025 will see participation from over 500 delegates, including high-ranking officials and regional experts, reflecting strong engagement in regional discussions.

In Ha Tinh, authorities apprehended 30 individuals linked to a major fraud scheme operating in Cambodia. Additionally, 26 others were detained at airports while trying to enter Vietnam.

The recent engagements between Vietnamese and Lao officials illustrate a commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. As Vietnam prepares for significant discussions with multiple international stakeholders, including the US and ASEAN nations, its proactive approach aims to foster dialog and mutual benefits. The arrests in Ha Tinh also reflect ongoing efforts to address fraud and ensure safety.
