The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has urged its members to support Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato for the AUC chairperson elections. SADC’s letter confirmed that Madagascar formally requested backing from member states and emphasized Randriamandrato’s unique position as the only SADC candidate. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has called upon its member states to support Richard Randriamandrato, the former Foreign Affairs Minister of Madagascar, in the upcoming election for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson. SADC’s Secretariat confirmed that Madagascar has officially requested backing from the 16-member bloc, emphasizing the urgency of their appeal.
Due to time constraints, the SADC Secretariat, in consultation with the Council chairperson, decided against convening an Extraordinary Council of Ministers to discuss Madagascar’s request for support. Instead, they issued a letter dated February 12, inviting member states to rally behind Randriamandrato for the AUC chairperson position as per the Council’s August 2024 resolution.
SADC’s communication highlighted that Randriamandrato is the sole candidate from the SADC region shortlisted for the AUC chairperson role. It reiterated Madagascar’s request for support from the other member states, aiming to enhance Randriamandrato’s chances in the election.
SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi signed the letter, which was distributed to all 16 member states, including major countries like South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. The SADC emphasized that its advisory aligns with a prior Heads of State resolution regarding the monitoring and strategic guidance for the AUC elections.
The endorsement of Randriamandrato by SADC might reshape the current election landscape, introducing new competitive dynamics. He is set to compete against significant contenders, including Raila Odinga of Kenya and Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf on Saturday in Addis Ababa.
As preparations for the African Union’s 38th Ordinary Summit take place, heads of state are arriving in Ethiopia ahead of the critical elections for the next AUC Chairperson and deputy chairperson. Among the early arrivals is Kenya’s President William Ruto, alongside Tanzania’s leaders, indicating the summit’s growing momentum.
