Iraq Responds to Syrian FM’s Planned Visit Amid Mixed Reactions

The Iraqi parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee denied knowledge of an invitation for Syrian FM Asaad Al-Shibani to visit Iraq. Mukhtar Al-Moussawi warned that the visit would only be welcomed if it serves Iraq’s national interests, particularly regarding the missing Iraqis. The visit marks a significant diplomatic step post the collapse of Al-Assad’s regime in Syria.

The Foreign Relations Committee of the Iraqi parliament has denied any knowledge of a prior invitation for Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani to visit Iraq. Mukhtar Al-Moussawi, a committee member, stated, “The committee was unaware of the invitation to Minister Al-Shibani until his public statement.” He also cautioned that should the visit occur under pressure, it would not be favorably received.

Al-Moussawi pointed out that if the visit is beneficial to Iraq, such as addressing the plight of approximately 10,000 missing Iraqis in the Al-Hol camp, it might be viewed more positively. The planned trip, announced by Minister Al-Shibani at the World Government Summit in Dubai, would represent the first engagement between Syria’s new government and Iraq since Bashar Al-Assad’s regime fell.

A government source disclosed the visit on January 7, indicating discussions regarding several mutual interests, although specifics were not shared. Following the collapse of Al-Assad’s government, Syria has experienced increased diplomatic interactions, with numerous Arab and foreign delegations visiting and engaging with Syrian officials.

In summary, Iraqi parliament members are unaware of the proposed visit by Syrian FM Asaad Al-Shibani, emphasizing that if it is forced, it will not be welcomed. However, if the visit benefits Iraq’s interests, particularly regarding missing individuals, it may receive a different reception. This visit is significant as it marks a potential re-engagement following Syria’s political shift.
