In February, President Trump made headlines by cutting U.S. aid to South Africa, criticizing its land expropriation law. This law permits the government to seize property, a move Trump claims unjustly targets White Afrikaners, something the South African government strongly refutes.
During a previous statement, Ramaphosa argued, “We’re the only country on the continent where the colonizers came to stay and we have never driven them out of our country.” This assertion reflects ongoing debates over land ownership, as Whites still control over 70% of arable land in South Africa despite being just 7% of the population.
Adding complexity to the diplomatic relations, the South African government recently filed a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, accusing it of genocide against Palestinians. In recent news, the first group of 59 White South African refugees landed in Washington, D.C. These refugees were flown in on a U.S. government-chartered plane and will have a pathway to citizenship. However, they have also been reminded to quickly secure employment. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce described this initiative as a response to the “unjust racial discrimination” facing this group.
Ramaphosa has been vocal, calling out the Afrikaners as “cowards” for their hesitance to embrace the current political landscape in South Africa. He emphasizes that his administration is working to rectify inequalities that stem from apartheid, and this includes land reforms to address the racial disparities.
