Chad Junta Signs New Peace Accord with Northern Militias Over Gold Resources

Chad’s military junta has signed a peace accord with armed groups in the Miski region over disputes regarding gold deposits. The agreement cancels mining permits and suspends activities for a new survey. Leaders express hope for compliance, following a history of failed agreements, and commit to negotiations to avoid further violence.

On Sunday, Chad’s military junta signed a peace agreement with armed groups in the northern region, which had previously revolted over local gold resources. The accord was signed by government mediator Saleh Kebzabo with two factions active in the Miski area of Tibesti province, adjacent to Libya. Military confrontations occurred between these groups and Chadian Defense and Security Forces from 2019 to 2020, primarily revolving around the lucrative gold mines in the region.

As part of the peace deal, all mining licenses in the Miski area have been revoked, and all extraction activities will halt pending a new survey of the region’s mineral resources. The Miski Self-Defence Committee, which has barred government officials from entering Miski for several years, hopes for compliance with this agreement, unlike previous failed accords in 2019 and 2023.

Djimet Chava, president of the Miski Self-Defence Committee, expressed confidence in the new agreement, emphasizing mutual respect for commitments made. He stated, “It is for the two sides to respect their engagements.” Chava also noted their commitment to dialogue: “Even if there is a blockage, we are determined to negotiate instead of using force.”

The signing of the peace accord between Chad’s military junta and regional militias signifies a potential step forward in resolving ongoing conflicts over gold mining in Miski. Previous agreements have faltered, highlighting the challenges faced by both sides. The new accord aims to foster cooperation and dialogue, with an emphasis on mutual respect for the terms outlined.
