Pakistan is looking to enhance its relationship with Afghanistan through planned high-level visits and discussions on mutual challenges, including terrorism and refugee issues. Ambassador Sadiq briefed the Senate on efforts to reset ties and engage in constructive dialogue to foster better bilateral relations.
Pakistan is initiating an effort to stabilize its relations with Afghanistan, as conveyed by Ambassador Muhammad Sadiq during a Senate committee meeting. High-level visits are being organized to address existing tensions and improve bilateral ties. Sadiq’s recent trip to Kabul was part of this strategy to discuss the crucial issue of terrorist sanctuaries within Afghan territory.
During the closed-door session, Senator Irfan Siddiqui chaired discussions on the challenges facing Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. Sadiq reported on the constructive talks regarding regional developments and reaffirmed plans for upcoming high-level visits aimed at advancing bilateral negotiations. The committee is focused on addressing issues, including the actions of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Concurrently, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi expressed concerns during his meeting with Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani, Pakistan’s ChargĂ© d’Affaires. He criticized the forced deportation of Afghan refugees, referring to it as detrimental to diplomatic relations. Afghanistan’s foreign ministry emphasized the need for mutual cooperation amidst ongoing discussions between the two nations.
Since October 2023, Pakistan has been deporting undocumented Afghans, extending the action to those possessing Afghan Citizen Cards. Pakistani officials justified this move by stating the country cannot indefinitely host such individuals, highlighting the need for clear bilateral arrangements moving forward.
The recent discussions indicate a desire for improved Pakistan-Afghanistan relations through high-level diplomatic engagements. Both countries recognize the urgency of addressing critical issues such as terrorism and refugee management, promoting collaboration to enhance political and economic ties. Continued dialogue and mutual understanding are essential for fostering a stable relationship.
