General Electric (GE) in Iraq announced the successful completion of 30 substations aimed at enhancing the electricity transmission network. The company also revealed plans to upgrade production units from simple cycle to combined cycle technology for better efficiency.
Rashid Al-Janabi, GE’s director, highlighted their achievements, adding 19 gigawatts to the Iraqi grid over the past decade alongside the completion of over 30 substations to reinforce the transmission network.
Al-Janabi noted the close collaboration with the Iraqi government, particularly the Ministry of Electricity, which has yielded significant progress in strategic projects for electricity stability. GE has entered a long-term maintenance agreement to ensure continuous operation of a 7-gigawatt electricity generation system, preparing for upcoming demand in summer.
The modernization initiatives involve utilizing the latest GE Vernova technologies to enhance production efficiency by converting power generation units, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent.
In the transmission sector, six 132 kV transmission stations were completed last year, ahead of schedule, demonstrating notable advancement in electricity transmission projects in Iraq. Al-Janabi reaffirmed the ongoing efforts to develop Iraq’s energy sector through updated networks and improved infrastructure, ensuring reliable electricity for citizens.
