Tropical Cyclone Jude Causes Deaths and Displacement in Mozambique and Malawi

Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives, causing widespread displacement in Mozambique and Malawi. Six fatalities occurred in Mozambique, with 9,525 displaced, while three people died in Malawi, rendering 20,000 homeless. The cyclone disrupted relief operations due to washed-away infrastructure, and challenges persist from a previous cyclone, Cyclone Chido.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in at least nine fatalities across Mozambique and Malawi, according to official reports. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique documented six deaths, 20 injuries, and 9,525 people displaced across the Nampula and Niasa provinces, as well as Zambezia. In Malawi, three deaths occurred, and around 20,000 individuals have lost their homes due to severe flooding caused by the cyclone.

The cyclone struck northern Mozambique early on Sunday before moving to southern Malawi, where significant flooding persisted from Monday to Wednesday. According to Chiphiliro Khamula, the spokesperson for Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), evacuees are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has indicated that relief efforts are being hindered by damaged infrastructure, as roads and bridges have been washed out by the flooding. This situation follows the devastation of Cyclone Chido in December 2022, which killed 73 people in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi, highlighting the region’s ongoing vulnerability to tropical cyclones.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has created a humanitarian crisis across Mozambique and Malawi, resulting in nine deaths and significant displacement. The ongoing challenges for relief efforts reflect the need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness in this cyclone-prone region. Continued monitoring and support will be essential as recovery efforts unfold following this devastating event.
