Impact of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique and Malawi: A Humanitarian Crisis

Tropical Cyclone Jude has been fatal in Mozambique and Malawi, claiming nine lives and displacing thousands. Relief operations are complicated by washed out roads. Cyclone Chido previously devastated the area in December.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused significant devastation in Mozambique and Malawi, resulting in at least nine confirmed fatalities. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) of Mozambique reported six deaths, 20 injuries, and over 9,500 people displaced in Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia provinces. The U.N. reports that relief efforts are being hindered due to compromised infrastructure, notably washed away roads and bridges.

In Malawi, the cyclone has claimed three lives, and approximately 20,000 individuals have been rendered homeless due to severe flooding in the southern region. Chiphiliro Khamula from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) indicated that those affected are currently being housed in evacuation centers.

The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique on Sunday and thereafter moved toward southern Malawi, causing extensive flooding from Monday through Wednesday. This event follows last December’s Cyclone Chido, which resulted in 73 deaths in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in nine fatalities across Mozambique and Malawi, with extensive displacement and infrastructural challenges complicating relief efforts. As the cyclone influenced both nations, the humanitarian impact echoes the devastation from Cyclone Chido last December, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in these regions due to such extreme weather events.
